Question

Would you read/do you think people would read paranormal (vampire/werewolf) romance where the hero is the vampire, the heroine is the werewolf, they are both university professors, and theirs is a snarky and banter-y relationship?

I promise nothing. Just the fact that I have said something about it here may mean I wind up talking about it instead of ever writing it.

Randomness from the Star Wars Holiday Special

So. I've pre-populated the tags for the named characters from the special now. Including Lumpy and all three of his synonymous names.

So now we're all set to run a Star Wars Holiday Special characters challenge.

;-D

I think my favorite part of this OMGWTF fandom wrangling has to be this:

"Though scenes of Chief Bast conversation with Darth Vader cut from A New Hope were included in The Star Wars Holiday Special, Bast's presence with Tarkin during the final moments of the Death Star shows that this is not the same officer."

"The lookalike officer in the Holiday Special has not yet been identified. His connection with Bast, if any, has not been explained."

I swear, there's a wookieepedia page for each of them... "This article is about the Imperial officer. You may be looking for his look-alike..."

http://starwars.wikia.com/wiki/Moradmin_Bast

http://starwars.wikia.com/wiki/Unidentified_Moradmin_Bast_look-alike

I mean. Really. SRS BZNZ.

And no, I did not pre-populate the unidentified look-alike. X-P

What the Fuck is Wrong With People?

Cats are not dogs. They live a lot longer, for one thing, and why would people not think that would translate into their early development as well?

What the fuck am I talking about, you ask? I am talking about this:

Eight-week-old kittens are not old enough to go to new homes.

Apart from everything else, you can't get an accurate feline leuk test until they are twelve weeks.

Puppies are ready to go at about eight weeks, which is about when they start being able to sleep through the night and not have to get up and pee at two in the morning anymore. (Although just like with kids, this depends on the individual.)

Kittens are not ready yet. They are still too little.

Random Dreamwidth Love

Reason 997 why to love Dreamwidth - from their weekly update post

* Icon keyword renaming. As everyone with a fondness for icons knows, if you rename an icon's keywords (maybe you've changed your naming scheme, or discovered a typo that's been there for months and you just realized) all previous uses of the icon revert to default, because the keyword has been changed. Well, thanks to [info - dreamwidth.org] allen's hard work -- and I mean 'hard work'; this patch went through a ton of revision -- you will soon be able to pick whether or not you want to update old posts to use the new keywords, thus making sure that your old posts keep showing the right icon even though you've changed the icon's name

By the way, reason 903 to love DW is that their weekly news post is actual news and won't make you want to scratch your eyes out.

I've got invites.

TNT cancels Raising the Bar, which co-stars J August Richards.

The series is not returning due to low ratings. However love the last line "Are you guys bummed about the end of Raising the Bar or just counting the minutes until Christian Kane comes back with more Leverage?"

Of no details from one's Yuletide recipient: you have no reason not to write the crack that fills you with not-so-sekrit glee.

This revelation brought to you by the letter Eliza and the number 605 words. And oh, I cannot wait to talk about this story already.

I'm asking. I'm asking. How do you do it? How?

slythwolf [userpic]
My Whole Fucking Life

People have been telling me that if I just try I can do anything I want blah blah blah. HOW DO YOU TRY. SERIOUSLY. I keep asking and asking and everyone says oh you have to figure it out for yourself WELL HOW THE FUCK DO YOU DO THAT.

Cannot, cannot, cannot get there from here. If you tell me what direction to start in I WILL START. If you tell me what I can do about this I WILL DO IT! If you tell me to take it one step at a time THAT IS A FUCKING COP-OUT BECAUSE WHAT ARE THE STEPS.

It is not depression. My life legitimately sucks. Most of the time I am happy anyway.

AND FUCK YES I AM PISSED OFF THAT I WILL NEVER REACH MY POTENTIAL. Even if I MAGICALLY manage to go back to school at this point, THAT IS STILL NOT REACHING MY POTENTIAL, BECAUSE MY POTENTIAL WAS TO HAVE MULTIPLE Ph.Ds BY NOW AND I DO NOT.

I can get them later BUT THAT IS NOT HAVING THEM BY NOW.

I graduated from high school at 17 having taken two full years of college courses. I was supposed to be done with college at 19. I then proceeded to fuck around for 7 years because:

- undiagnosed ADHD not conducive to finishing school
- everyone fucking told me college would be different but it was JUST LIKE HIGH SCHOOL

College! Was supposed to be this magical land where my learning style was going to be the right one for once! I was supposed to have classes where attendance wasn't taken and I didn't have to turn in the homework and I could just read the book and show up to get 100% on the test! NO FUCKING AROUND WITH ALL THE ENTIRELY UNNECESSARY BULLSHIT IN BETWEEN. I was no longer supposed to be assigned papers to write on specific topics about which I had nothing to say! All the busywork was supposed to be over. IT WAS ALL A LIE.

Here is a tip: by the time I got to college, I was fed up with doing busywork that was too easy to keep me awake. If it was too easy, I JUST DIDN'T DO IT. And because I was told (yes, those of you who are in or have been to college, people--many, many people!--actually told me this) that "college professors don't grade homework, they assign it for you to learn from on your own but never collect it", I thought that was going to fly.

TURNS OUT IT DOESN'T.

IT TURNS OUT COLLEGE IS JUST LIKE HIGH SCHOOL, WHO KNEW. You have to show up every day and you get graded on attendance and class participation WHICH IS SOFT, SOFT, it is BULLSHIT, the purpose of the class is supposed to be to TEACH YOU SOMETHING, you should not be able to squeak by NOT KNOWING IT because your ASS WAS IN A CHAIR. And if I CAN learn it without PUTTING my ass in that chair THEN I HAVE SUCCEEDED.

I should have gone to school IN GERMANY where you SIGN UP FOR EXAMS and then read books and attend lectures based on what they tell you you're going to need to know, AND THEN YOU TAKE THE EXAM.

REL 325 or whatever it was at MSU. This is an example of what I am talking about. 300-level religion class, Myth, Self and Religion in the Ancient Near East, no attendance policy, no papers, no homework, just midterm and final. Show up, listen to lecture, take notes, read what the professor tells you to read. I DIDN'T EVEN BUY THE BOOKS FOR THAT CLASS. (I couldn't afford them, see also my father's "friend" in Seattle and the money and presents he was sending her.) I GOT A 3.5 IN IT.

Because Dr. Greene didn't make me do any POINTLESS BULLSHIT.

Give me something to learn. Let me learn it. Test my knowledge. Anything additional to that is COMPLETELY POINTLESS.

Do not talk to me about HARD WORK. The only things I have EVER had to work hard at involve gross motor functions. I will never be halfway decent at that stuff because I have a physical disability preventing it. HARD WORK GETS ME EXACTLY NOWHERE. Hard work is POINTLESS.

Give me something to learn, you don't even have to tell me how to learn it. Give me something to learn, expect me to learn it by the final, I will not disappoint you.

I wouldn't have even needed my ADHD diagnosed if people hadn't treated me like I needed the pointless busywork to help me understand.

How many classes have I taken where I got a C or worse in the class and 100% on every test and quiz because I did not show up or turn in my homework? HOW MUCH BULLSHIT IS IT THAT I UNDERSTOOD WHAT THEY WERE TEACHING ME AND WAS FAILED ANYWAY. Do you know how discouraging that is? How it feels to know that I have to retake a class I already understand, when it was such torture the first time and now it's going to be even easier. How the hell do I force myself the second time around to even do as much of the pointless shit as I managed in the first place?

Maybe I am arrogant. Maybe that's what it comes down to. Maybe it is arrogant to think that because I am a genius I should not be required to do pointless shit simply out of some misguided feeling of equality with the masses in general. Everybody has to do the busywork, everybody has to jump through the same hoops. Maybe resenting that is arrogance. But you know, I just don't think I should have to slow down and pretend there's a point to it when there isn't.

Now I have to do something I was never prepared for, I am a working-class housewife, I need to get a minimum-wage job where I will be treated like I'm stupider than average because I can't do any better than entry-level retail at 27.

27 is not too old for a lot of things. But it's too old to be working at a fucking chain store and be treated like you're not an idiot unless you're the manager. Which I don't WANT to be.

I am--not really all that about going to the temp services because they tell you you dressed so nice, you look so pretty, we don't want to give you the better-paying factory job because you just don't seem like the kind of person who shows up in boots and a T-shirt, we want to send you to the casino, you would be a better fit there. AND THEN THEY SEND YOU TO SCRUB TOILETS WITH YOUR HANDS.

I RESENT THIS SHIT. I RESENT THE HELL OUT OF IT. I RESENT HAVING TO WORK UNDER PEOPLE THAN WHOM I AM SMARTER AND BE AT THE BOTTOM OF COMPANIES I COULD BE RUNNING BETTER THAN THE PEOPLE IN CHARGE.

But that is where I am stuck. I am away from everyone who knows me and I have nothing on paper to show how smart I am. YOU TELL ME HOW I AM NOT SCREWED. YOU TELL ME HOW I CAN GET THERE FROM HERE.

If you want to tell me I can, but you cannot tell me HOW, then SHUT THE FUCK UP.

Blue Gloves Assault - Another campaign to bring back Firefly.

http://bluegloveassault.webs.com/

The Blue Glove Assault is planning to send blue gloves to Universal on 20 September 2010 in an effort to convince the execs to bring back Firefly.

From the group's website:
"So- what we're going to do is this: every Browncoat, from costume wearers to casual viewers, is going to send in to Universal a pair of disposable rubber gloves. With these gloves will be a card reading "Can't stop the signal." These will all go out on the 20th of September, the anniversary of the airing of Firefly."

Buffy mentioned in Philosophy Now.

http://www.philosophynow.org/issue73/73lawrence.htm

John Shelton Lawrence thinks along the lines of Danny Fingeroth about "what makes a superhero, philosophically speaking", with Buffy being an example of the "Amazon"-category of superheros.
